GM Melikset Khachiyan Announces Lecture Topic

GM Khachiyan has announced his lecture topic area for his group lecture at the Southern Rocky Open on 2/23/12. He will be thoroughly analyzing/discussing his recent game which won game of the year for the United State Chess League. From this game, he will discuss his opening preparation which resulted from other games played in this similar line and his thought processes throughout the game. GM Khachiyan is an elite chess lecturer who teaches camps in California and Arizona each year. In August, he will be one of three featured teachers at a camp in California alongside World Champion GM Vishy Annand. The University of New Mexico chess team won the Division III (under 2000 team rating) award at the Pan Am games with a 3/6 team score. As the 18th seed, they finished 13th out of 28 teams, which is impressive given the caliber of the teams in the tournament. UNM's team was Silas Perry, Doug Thigpen, Lara Armas, and Dante Archuleta. Congratulations to the UNM chess team! Go Lobos!

I am extremely excited to announce that GM Georg Meier will be attending the 2012 Southern Rocky FIDE Open & U.S. G/15 Championship! GM Meier is rated 2648 FIDE and 2763 USCF. He is ranked #89 in the world, #3 in Germany, and now plays for Susan Polgar's Texas Tech Red Raider chess team.

It looks as though this year's event will be even stronger than last year with 3 GMs already entered!

Poe & the Turk: a Chess Mystery - October 22nd

The Loma Colorado library in Rio Rancho is hosting an Edgar Allan Poe chess event on Saturday, October 22nd (1-4pm) as part of The Big Read. The chess-playing "Turk" automaton toured Europe and America from about 1770 to 1840 and played chess against such historic figures as Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin. Poe wrote an essay called "Maelzel's Chess-Player" which detailed his thoughts on how the "machine" was able to play and win chess games. The library event will feature:

- Readings from Poe's essay
- A Skype session with an expert on the Turk
- Contributions from NMCO president Oren Stevens and Scott Kerns
- A chess tournament after the presentation

*The prize fund will be increased in each section. $1,500 guaranteed to 1st in open section. This will be an 80GPP tournament.

*There will be 2-day and 3-day schedules so some players can avoid playing 3 rounds in a day.

*The festival will be expanded to Thursday with a lecture my GM Yermolinsky (3:30PM) and a Simul by GM Khachiyan that day. All Thursday events will be held at the Hilton Howewood Suites and in between the two events there will be a Free BBQ for participants of the Thursday Simul and Lecture.

*Host Hotel will be moved to the Hilton Homewood Suites for a group price of $71 (Regularly $140, found as low as $109 online). Hotel has a fully complimentary breakfast each morning and full shuttle service. Each room is a suite with a full kitchen. There will be a link to get this rate on the SRFO website, limited space.

*There will be an unrated section for beginners.

*If you are interested in taking private lessons with either GM, they each have 3 blocks. If you are seriously interested in taking lessons, you will be paying them directly but I will scheduling the times.

*Boards will be for sale in advance online at SouthernRockyOpen.com

*Online payments can be made with Google Checkout this year.

2012 SRFO - Call for volunteers

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to inform our chess community that the Wired Kings will conditionally be hosting the Southern Rocky FIDE Open in 2012.

The primary condition is this: I need volunteers to help lighten the organizing load. I will still act as chief organizer and Scott in charge of @tournament logistics such as tournament directing activities, but I have identified a handful of organizing areas where I could use significant assistance.

These areas include the following:

1) Sponsor acquirement - we already have some sponsorship in place, but I could use someome to find board sponsors/sponsors of other prize ideas I have. Robert Hampton

2) Scholastic recruiters - 1 who would attend ABQ meets and 1 who would attend Northern meets would be helpful.

3) Unrated recruiter - I would like to use this tournament as a way to bring in some non-rated players. If we could have an unrated section to bring people into the activity who have never seen a tournament before and wouldn't otherwise deal with membership, I think it would be a good thing. Of course, the unrated section might attract youths who do not have memberships but play on their school team; however, I am specifically considering the idea of reaching out to the alibi, ABQ journal, Intel, etc. as conduits for additional out-reach. If you are well-connected, it would be quite helpful. I have contacts at some of the paper media sources that I could supply.

4) Tournament transportation mgr. - Last year there was considerable time and energy put into the transportation of titled players to and from airport/library/ hotel/restaurants/playing site. It is not required that the person filling this role would have to drive them everywhere, but at least be able to acquire additional help to ensure they always can get where they want when they need to be there.

5) Chess Board setup/take down - Multiple people to volunteer in advance to setup boards on the day of the tournament and take them down when we are finished. At least one of these volunteers should be in charge of the accounting/transfer of boards to the schools/clubs who will receive donated tournament-used boards. Aaron Blecha has volunteered to manage this process.

6) Photography - I need someone to ensure that the events are photographed good quality cameras. This person does not need to be at all of the events as long as they can find someone to fill in for them. Covered

7) Website Development - Last year Jeff Sallade helped a great deal with troubleshooting of the website and the setup of payment processes. I can manage the content, but we need someone to do advanced programming & troubleshooting. -Jeff has agreed to do it again this year.

8) Host hotel negotiations - Need to survey if the Plaza was acceptable and if we can find a replacement (or a higher end hotel as well).

Of course, there are several other duties which will require attention in the next 8 months which I had planned to keep with me or Scott (or simply forgot about). Please let me know if there is something you would like to manage (or help with)that is or is not included herein; if you contact me, I'll be happy to give you a general direction or any contacts/ideas that might be helpful along the way.

If we can get solid commitments in at least 4 areas, the WKCC will run the SRFO in 2012.

I would like to enthusiastically announce the February 2012 launch of the Albuquerque Chess League! The league will be open to all who wish to enter. We believe that it will suit all levels of play and most levels of time commitment.

In case you were wondering if it will be taking the place of Wired Kings Events, the answer is "soft of" for 5 months (Feb/April/June/August/October) of next year. The chess league will still be rated and will offer 2 (G/90) games per event date. Aside form the league, we will still be hosting "normal" events for 6 months (November is off for NM Open) of 2012 including the three championship events (NM Speed Chess, Quick Chess, and Class Championships).

I encourage everyone to follow the website for updates. The league will be limited to 20 teams in its first year. Teams will be limited to 3 players + up to 2 alternates. ; therefore, even though the start is several months away I would enter as soon as possible to avoid being locked out. If you are interested in playing, but will not have a team you can enter as an individual and I will find a team for you. I'd imagine that there will be several people who need players to be on the regular team and as alternates.

As I'm sure everyone knows by now, the big cheese at the Coronado (aka Frontier) chess club is stepping down and heading for Viginia. His farewell speech is tomorrow at just after 6:30p. Come by if you want to hear him. I hope to be there to collect class entries as well as listen to the speech...if I can get out of work on time.

Munir "Ramzi" Hammad is taking over pairings at the frontier. I wish Richard the best and the same for Ramzi. Hopefully the club will run for another 20 years. It has truly been a treasure in New Mexico Chess in darkest and brightest of times.

NM Class Championship

The NM Class Championship will be taking place on April 16th and 17th at the Desert Academy in Santa Fe (thanks to Rick Lass). A flyer will be posted to detail the tournament later today and I will try to send out some email announcements soon. The main differences are:

1) M/X will be grouped into class A. I didn't not want to discourage Masters and Experts from playing; however, I simply did not have the time to give sufficient notice to attract enough Masters/Experts for a M/X section. If I find that 4 or more M/X players want to enter, I'll break it off again. I just did not want to guarantee something for M/X's that could not be delivered.

2) Tournament is going to be 4 rounds this year. We had some space constraints compared to last year (8a-6p each day instead of 8a-11p). Because this event is a qualifying tournament for the Rocky Mountain Team Chess Challenge, I wanted to keep the time control the same for qualifier and RMTCC.

3) The RMTCC will be played in New Mexico this year. I am 94% certain it will be played in Taos at the UNM-Taos campus. There will also be side tournaments for those who do not qualify to play in the RMTCC. Last year there was a quad tournament on the day of the RMTCC and on the next day there was G/29 open tournament which had good participation from both teams and the surrounding area. Our representative for 1st board will be Steve Sandager, 2nd board will be determined on April 2nd (Denker Rep), and 3rd through 7th boards will be determined at this tournament.

I apologize for the late notice on tournament logistics. After the SRFO, I was worn down and the vacation I had to take for setup and player accommodation caused me to get behind at work. I hope we will still have an adequate showing at this tournament despite timing issues.

CLO Story to upload tonight

The Chess Life Online story that I wrote about the Southern Rocky FIDE Open is expected to be uploaded tonight at USchess.org. The story includes a brief outline of tournament inspiratation & advertising techniques, a recap of important events, 2-3 photos, and three games including the final game annotated by tournament winner NM Lior Lapid.

I really could have written a novel on what was done for the tournament and all of the people that helped along the way, but you'll have to settle for the Cliff's Notes. There may or may not be an expanded version in the Desert Knight.

I hope everyone will check it out. I will also be posting a slideshow at some point on the left side of this page.

I just wanted to remind people of two deadlines that are quickly approaching for the Southern Rocky FIDE Open.

February 5th - Early entry deadline. It is approximately $20 cheaper to enter prior to this date as opposed to entering at the site. Entry can be made via mail or online at www.SouthernRockyOpen.com February 10th - Deadline for hotel rate at the Plaza Inn. If your lodging at the Plaza is not booked by 2/10/11, the rate will be approximately $25 higher per night.

Hatcher v. Kasparov

Clarification on the Kasparov/Hatcher encounter:

These pictures were taken at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis the day after the Thanksgiving Open where Kasparov made a visit on short notice......the club found out Tues. before Thanksgiving that he was in town for a political lecture and wanted to see the club. 120 people walked upstairs to get there picture with Kasparov and Short (Nakamura was there too) but Wayne could not travel the stairs so Kasparov graciously stopped to see Wayne.

We were moved from the community room to the auditorium at the Downtown Library on the 11th for reasons beyond our control. The new room would not fit our needs so we are moving our date from December 11th to December 18th. At least we fould out with plenty of lead time...I guess this isa consequence of getting free space. All flyers will be changed and money will be refunded if these dates do not fit your schedule and you are already entered.

Aronian #1 in World

Based on the ongoing results of a tournament featuring Super-GM Levon Aronian, he has moved into #1 in the world FIDE chess ratings ahead of Magnus Carlsen. Of course, the tournament has not concluded and FIDE has substantial lag between tournaments and official reporting so this could change. However, I specifically mention this because his primary coach growing up was GM Melikset Khachiyan who is playng in the Southern Rocky FIDE Open. He is also playing in the blitz side event, giving a simul, and hosting a Q&A breakfast!
